Sanborn Insurance Maps were created for assessing fire insurance liability in towns and cities from 1867-2007, mostly for the Aetna Insurance Co.  SCHS has Sanborn maps for Socorro from 1886 through 1913.  They are of surprising detail showing all standing buildings and dimensions, often with the type or name of the business, with many other details to be gleaned.

Aside from their insurance value, Sanborn maps survive as the best (and often only) cartography that documents the urbanization of America.  Updated every few years, by comparing differences between maps, Socorro buildings that burned or were razed, and new construction, can easily be followed.
